Geography, My World Expands

My post today is concerned with places on the map,  how they have affected my life recently, and will be affecting it in the future.  Other lives are affected as well.  It’s not so much about me.

The trip to Kentucky was enjoyed by all.  It was so nice to see my brothers, nephew, and many cousins.  We had a lot of laughs (one in particular at my expense but it’s OK, it WAS funny), revisited many of the foods from my childhood (Donna is a wonderful cook and I came home with recipes), talked and talked about old times, and did some sightseeing.  Donna and Sonny, who were our hosts for the weekend, treated us like royalty and packed a lot into a short time.  Can’t wait for them to come north so we can return the hospitality.

I’ve written about my grandson Collin before, and especially about his joining the Army.  We recently learned that he’ll soon be shipping out for Afghanistan.  I’m happy that he’s doing something he loves, and he really is looking forward to his tour of duty there.  I’m not so thrilled.  I’m a worrier by nature, and this is going to be high on my worry list.  We want him to be safe, and well, and content with whatever he is doing.

Finally, Nikki dropped a bombshell on us the other day.  She and Ken, and the 3 kids still at home, will be leaving for Dundee, Scotland in January.  I haven’t had a chance to speak to her in depth about it, but here’s what I was able to comprehend (or maybe not) from our brief conversation.  She was asked to apply for a scholarship, did so, and got it.  A full ride to work on her Masters, I think.  I’m a little fuzzy on any details.  That’s pretty much all I know.      I’m very proud of her, but I can’t even put into words how much I’ll miss her/them.  I’ll try to be here for the kids and grandkids left behind who will also miss them tremendously.  That’s life!
